The Alte Heide in Munich-Schwabing
The Alte Heide is a historic residential neighborhood in Munich-Schwabing. It was created by Theodor Fischer between 1919 and 1928 and was intended to have the character of a “garden residential park.” The development was commissioned by the “Gemeinnützige Baugesellschaft Alte Heide,” a non-profit building society founded by industrial companies and the “Verein zur Verbesserung der Wohnungsverhältnisse in München e.V.” (Association for the Improvement of Housing Conditions in Munich).
The Alte Heide consists of a total of 26 residential buildings, each with three floors. The apartments themselves have two to five rooms. Most apartments were built with a living area of 60 square meters and had two rooms. They also included a toilet, a loggia, and a forecourt. Residents could bathe in a communal facility.
The next apartments, built from 1926 onwards, had a different floor plan and four rooms. They were also equipped with a kitchen, a bathroom, and a pantry. During this period, demand for larger apartments also grew. Hence the new apartments with the new floor plan.
After the end of World War II, there was a housing shortage in Munich, which is why additional attic apartments were integrated into the residential buildings starting in 1949. The Alte Heide was also supplemented by a villa, a school, and a building intended for administrative use.
The buildings were constructed in the Art Nouveau style and feature historicist elements. A small park and numerous gardens lie between the residential buildings.
The Alte Heide housing estate even has its own subway station, providing excellent connections to Munich’s public transport network. The housing estate is also sometimes spelled “Alte Haide.” There is also a sports club, FC Alte Haide Munich.
