Are you wondering what the term “door bolt” actually means? Then you’ve come to the right place in the blog of Munich Locksmith Herbert Pichelmaier. Here, we explain all the important terms from the world of locking and security technology for our customers and anyone interested.

Definition of Door Latch

The door latch is precisely the part of a door that, when locked, ensures that unauthorized persons cannot open the door.

In other words: If the door is locked, the door latch ensures that the door is blocked and cannot be opened by unauthorized persons.

Some laypeople often confuse the term “door latch” with “lock trap“. The terms “lock” and “locking cylinder” are similar; see also here.

There are many different types of door bolts or door locking devices. There are variants such as “hooked,” “pivoted,” “pushed forward,” or “pre-positioned.”

The door bolt is often operated via a lock.

How does the door locking function work with the bolt?

A door bolt can be, among other things, a loose bar or a bolt that can be moved. Another variant is the bolt in the form of a screwed-on hook.

In principle, when the door is locked, the bolt is connected to a fixed element that cannot move back and forth. The corresponding immovable element could be, for example, the wall next to the door, or even the floor. It is also possible for the deadbolt to be connected to a second door leaf. In the latter case, an additional deadbolt is required to secure the door.

It is important for the functionality of a deadbolt that the locking action should be quick and effortless. (This also applies to unlocking the door, of course!). The laborious task of unscrewing the deadbolt would certainly not be particularly convenient for people who want to get into their apartment or house quickly.

If a deadbolt is to be operated from two sides, a lock is required. Therefore, most front and apartment doors also have a lock that can be used to operate the deadbolt.
