The Graggenau Quarter in Munich’s Old Town

The name of the Graggenau Quarter in Munich’s Old Town derives from the word “Gragkenawe,” which was an earlier field name for this area and originates from the word “Krack,” meaning crow or raven. The Graggenau Quarter is therefore located in an area where there were supposedly numerous crows in the past.

Together with the Kreuzviertel, the Graggenau Quarter formed the jurisdiction of the women’s parish in the Middle Ages. Officially, the two quarters are now also known as Altstadt Nord (North Old Town).
