Baumkirchen in the Munich district of Berg am Laim

Baumkirchen is a settlement in the Munich district of Berg am Laim and was first documented in the 9th century as “ad Pouminunchirihum.” This settlement name refers to a church made of large tree trunks. Another possible interpretation, however, is “church surrounded by trees.”

The center of the former village was near the Catholic St. Stephen’s Church, one of the oldest churches in the Munich area. According to a document from 1052, this church was donated to the Freising Canonry of St. Veit by Emperor Henry III.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the village of Baumkirchen was incorporated into Berg am Laim, which was then a manorial estate. Later, in 1818, the municipality of Berg am Laim was finally founded, and Baumkirchen became a district of this new municipality. The incorporation of Berg am Laim into Munich finally took place in 1913.
