Gern is a beautiful neighborhood in the Munich district of Neuhausen, or rather, the Munich city district of Neuhausen-Nymphenburg. Gern was first mentioned in writing in 1025, when it was part of the fiefdom of the Freising Bishop Egilbert von Moosburg.

In the 12th century, Gern was mentioned as Kerin. Until its secularization in 1803, the five farms of Gern belonged to the Bishopric of Freising. The Jägerhäusl (hunter’s house) was added later as a sixth property. Over the course of the 19th century, Gern developed from a farming village into a beautiful residential suburb of Munich. Gern was incorporated into Munich together with the rural municipality of Nymphenburg in 1899.

The Gern district also houses the beautiful Gern villa colony, which is also the oldest terraced housing development in the Bavarian capital. Founded in 1892 on Böcklinstraße, the Heilmann & Littmann company oversaw the construction of the colony. The two-story houses were built in the country house style. The different floor plans were already something special at the time. Today, some of the buildings are listed buildings.

Gern also has its own subway station of the same name. The neighborhood is therefore very well connected to Munich’s public transport network.
