St. Emmeram in Oberföhring
St. Emmeram is a district of the Munich borough of Oberföhring, and therefore belongs to the Bogenhausen district. The district is located north of the center of Oberföhring, directly on the Middle Isar Canal.
It is claimed that St. Emmeram is located at the exact spot where the body of Saint Emmeram was once shipped to Regensburg. This is how a chapel belonging to a royal estate was mentioned as early as 822. Louis the Child, the last Carolingian king, donated the estate to the Bishop of Freising at the beginning of the 10th century.
The old place name Chüntal (= Königstal) refers to the aforementioned former royal estate. The name St. Emmeram, or sannd Haymran, has been documented since 1429.
In 1663, a hermitage was built next to the chapel for hermits, who built a school for the children in this area. This school was the first in northeast Munich and was nationalized in 1803. The chapel was demolished in 1820. Today, the St. Emmeram Memorial Chapel commemorates the former chapel. It stands directly next to the St. Emmeram Mill, which today also offers food and drink.
St. Emmeram was incorporated into Munich in 1913, along with the municipality of Oberföhring. The townscape is characterized by single-family homes with gardens. St. Emmeram is accessible via two streets. The district is also accessible via the Munich tram.
