Theresienhöhe in the Munich district of Schwanthalerhöhe

Theresienhöhe is a relatively new residential area in the Munich district of Schwanthalerhöhe, located primarily on the street of the same name, Theresienhöhe. The overall concept of the new district was designed based on an urban development competition held in 1996. The competition was won by the architectural firm of Otto Steidle and the Berlin landscape architecture firm Thomanek and Duquesnoy.

Theresienhöhe is primarily known for the Bavaria statue and the Hall of Fame located there, which was built in the 19th century according to plans by the architect Leo von Klenze and surrounded by Bavaria Park. Starting at the turn of the century, an exhibition park was also developed and opened in 1908 to mark the 750th anniversary of the city of Munich. A few months later, an amusement park was also built here, but it closed again in 1934.

The German Trade Fair Munich was held on the exhibition grounds in 1922. Two major transport exhibitions took place here in 1925 and 1953. And finally, the World Transport Exhibition followed in 1965. A wrestling hall was built for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. The exhibition and trade fair grounds continued to expand until the 1990s. More and more halls were added – until the New Munich Trade Fair Center finally replaced Theresienhöhe.

The current residential area consists of approximately 1,400 residential units and has created numerous jobs. It is estimated that there will be around 5,000 jobs in Theresienhöhe later.
