The kolonialsiedlung in the Munich district of Zamdorf
The Colonial Settlement is located in the Munich district of Zamdorf, and thus in the Munich district of Bogenhausen. It is also known as the Afrikasiedlung (African Settlement) because it contains many streets whose names commemorate former African explorers.
The Colonial Settlement is bordered to the south by Eggenfelder Straße and lies exactly between Zamilapark and the Steinhausen settlement, which belongs to Steinhausen. It is over 600 meters wide and around 400 meters long. The total area is approximately 23 hectares. The settlement also has a beautiful allotment garden in the southeast, which is approximately 3 hectares in size.
The Colonial Settlement was built in 1934 and was initially called the “Zamdorf Unemployed Settlement.” It only later received its current name. The Colonial Settlement, or Afrikasiedlung, includes Rohlfsstraße, named after Gerhard Rohlfs, who crossed the Sahara. Furthermore, the Afrikasiedlung (African settlement) features an Emin Pasha Street, named after Eduard Schnitzer, who served as governor of Equatoria as Emin Pasha.
Because some street names were controversial, Karl-Peters-Straße, for example, was renamed Ida-Pfeiffer-Straße. Ida Pfeiffer is a well-known travel writer.
The first houses in the colonial settlement were built in 1934. In just a few years, the neighborhood grew to approximately 140 residential units, over 60 of which were semi-detached houses. Each residential unit had an area of over 50 square meters. A garden of approximately 200 square meters was also added to each unit. This was used for growing vegetables and keeping small animals.
